Swift Transportation was founded in 1966 by Jerry Moyes. Operations began under the name of Common Market and started with importing steel from the ports of Los Angeles, California to Phoenix, Arizona then returning with cotton from Arizona to be delivered to Southern California. Jerry, his father, brother and partner worked to increase the company’s’ annual revenues to $25 million by 1984. Jerry become president, chairman and CEO in 1984 and in 1985 when his father died, he bought out his other two partners.
By 1990, Swift Transportation had grown to a $125 million carrier with over 800 trucks. The company did a stock market launch (IPO) and became a publicly traded entity on the MASDAQ market system under the symbol of Swift. In 1991, using the money raised from the IPO, Swift bought Stephens City, Virginia’s Fulton, Inc for $9 million.
By the end of 2009, Swift operated 16,200 units, a fleet of 48,600 trailers and 4,500 intermodal containers from 35 terminals in the US and Mexico generating just over $2.5 billion in revenue.
Today Swift if the largest truckload motor carrier in the world owning over 40 full-service facilities in both the United Sates and Mexico. Swift owns 100% of Trans-Mex, which is a Nuevo Laredo, Mexico based carrier. Swift has border crossing representatives at all major Mexican border crossings every day to expedited customs clearance.
