Not all truck driving jobs are alike. Flatbed trucking is a niche that demands more from the drivers; more know-how and more physical activity. Meeting the requirements can translate into more pay and better benefits. Unlike tractor trailers, flatbeds carry loads that aren’t in containers. For obvious safety reasons, the flatbed shipments must be properly tied down and secured. It’s crucial to prevent loosening or shifting of the cargo.

Flatbed drivers need to become familiar with using and maintaining extra equipment. Chains, load binders, ratchet tie-downs and other restraining tools are part of the routine preparation for hauling. Some loads require being fully covered by tarps. The tarps also need to be fully secured.

There is no shortage of flatbed trucking companies needing qualified drivers. Industrial demand for the safe and timely delivery of commodities such as steel, pipes, machinery and lumber is ongoing. Some hauling outfits have been steadily serving the same customers for more than half a century.

Freight forwarding is the backbone of the economy. Whether shipping for an individual, a small company or a major industrial corporation, the timely shipping of goods keeps everything moving. Imagine how quickly it would all grind to a standstill if the trucks stood idle. Truck driving jobs need to be filled quickly with competent drivers.

Drivers become an integral part of providing the reliability that meets a company’s objective while advancing its reputation. In the trucking industry, a hauler’s reputation can mean the difference between failure, survival and outstanding success. The flatbed drivers are commonly given incentives to achieve a high rating for job performance.

Most flatbed hauling companies are eager to hire owner-operators. Many also prefer to hire driving teams. Pairing drivers increases the safety of the load as well as the safety of the drivers. It also lowers the physical demands through team effort.

How To Get Trained For The Best Truck Driving Jobs

Some flatbed transportation companies train drivers to join their teams. They usually prefer that the drivers have some prior commercial OTR (over the road) experience. They then give any necessary instructions related to flatbed transporting safety, proper tie-downs and preventing and correcting load shifts.

Having no prior experience doesn’t bar anyone from becoming a professional flatbed driver. Truck driving schools, some operated by trucking companies, offer instructions on how to drive various types of transport trucks including flatbeds. The completion of a commercial driver’s course results in the issuance of a CDL upon passing the subsequent tests.

There’s a lot to learn beyond the operation of commercial trucks. Knowing the freight class of a load tells a lot about how it needs to be handled. There are 18 specific classifications for transporting commodities. The classification, designated by a number, correlates with four primary characteristics of the freight.

The class designation relays the density of the cargo. It also determines the maximum width and length for any particular commodity. One of the most valuable pieces of information derived from the classification number is the projected ease of handling. The final piece of information derived from the code is the liability factor which places a value on the shipment as well as it’s likelihood to be stolen or damaged.

Of course, it takes more than a newly-acquired CDL to drive solo. New drivers are usually partnered with more experienced OTR drivers for several months. The ongoing on-the-job training provides more practical and in-depth experience as real situations are encountered and remedied. After some experience is gained in a real world driving environment, companies often try to start the new drivers out slowly with local truck driving jobs. These allows new drivers to gradually build up their confidence and experience while be close enough to their home base.

Salary Guidelines For Truck Driving Careers

A truck driver salary fluctuates depending upon several variables. Most flatbed trucking companies pay by the mile. However, there are often added incentives that boost the overall income. There can be recognition, awards and monetary bonuses given for attendance, retention (length of time with the company), miles logged and safety milestones.

When considering the salary, it’s also important to weigh-in the added benefits. Health insurance, 401k plans, lease/ownership opportunities, paid vacation time and other perks might tip the scales when choosing one company over another. For some, there is non-monetary value when given the option of staying within home range and being with their families every night.

Selecting the right truck driving jobs can lead to a lucrative and secure career. Build a reputation mile-by-mile, maintain a clean safety record, demonstrate reliability and be a team player. Reach for the incentives and the rewards will follow. Transport yourself up the ladder of success while you transport freight.

Have you ever wondered how someone moves from one side of the country to another and manages to get their car delivered right to their front door? The answer is they use auto transport companies to ship their vehicles. Of course, this means someone needs to actually drive the truck that transports the cars over long distances. The truth here is not many people are capable of driving such a truck as few have the skills and high level of professional responsibility required to do so. This creates a great opportunity to those that are up to the task.

Flatbed trucking companies that deal in shipping cars are always looking for quality professionals. Anyone that feels they can rise to the occasion of handling such a job should look closer at the options available for employment. If nothing else, the listings of what a truck driver salary is should motivate many to think seriously about such a career.

Obviously, you will need to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in order to work such a job. You will also need to be expertly trained in how to work for auto transport companies. That means you will have to learn how to drive a truck that is specifically carrying cars as freight. The way to do this starts with looking for truck driving schools that offer full instruction in how to acquire a CDL and how to transport cars. Even those that already many have a CDL and understand the basics of freight class driving, learning how to transport cars through a special trucking school program can open other marketable career opportunities.

Always be mindful of one thing: if you have a reliable and reputable certification from a legitimate truck driver school, your chances of employment will increase. This is why seeking the best school is highly advised.

Experience is also important. Those that have worked in the trucking or any driving related capacity will be better primed for being selected for a job than someone that has little or no experience. That said, regardless of your experience level, you must have a clean driving record. Without a clean driving record, it will be very difficult to be hired. So, if you are serious about a career in auto freight forwarding, you will want to be a good driver that does not get moving violations.

For those that complete a training program, the next step will be to actually look for a job with auto transport companies. Probably the easiest way to do this would be to look online for open job listings. Many companies that have openings for jobs likely do need them filled quickly. After all, the company cannot make money if it cannot move cars due to a lack of drivers. So, skimming the various online openings for such jobs is advised.

It also would not hurt to seek out those jobs that have not yet been advertised. The way this achieved is through employing a tried and true method. You would cold call the various transport companies and ask about how to formally apply for a position.

There might even be services which work towards placing qualified professional drivers into jobs. It should go without saying that anyone interested in what such services have to offer must only look towards working with a reliable and reputable service. Honestly, if the quality of the service is lacking, it will not be able to help place anyone in a job effectively. So, performing a decent amount of research on the background of the service is advised. This way, you can gear your attention towards the reliable services while avoiding those services which are less than stellar.

Once again, not very many people have the skills and experience to drive a truck for car transport companies. However, there is always a strong demand for auto transport services. After all, people do move and the have to take their cars to their new residence. This is where many great opportunities are opened for someone up to handle the task. With the right training, experience and driving record, a motivated driver could be selected for such a job and gain the great salary and benefits that go with it.

Long drives, big trucks, and truck stop food are just some of the things that go along with being a truck driver today. For a truck driver, however, the biggest incentive is their paycheck. A truck driver salary is not something to take lightly. It can mean the difference between a happy driver and a delivery that is never completed. Understanding the right path for a success career in trucking before you get started can help you get the salary and security you deserve.

The Truck Driver Salary Scale

The salary scale typically begins around $28,000 and can go as high as $68,000 as reported by Payscale.com. Truck drivers who work for shipping companies and distribution centers can expect to earn a fairly decent salary based on these figures. However, if the driver is an independent contractor, the salary depends on a number of factors.

An independent truck driver is his or her own boss and therefore can negotiate the rates they will accept for the delivery of cargo. Often, independent drivers will add travel accommodations to their rates as a part of their negotiations with their clients. This is especially true of independent drivers who travel distances further than 700 miles in a day to make a delivery. Fatigue is a danger to truck drivers and therefore the need to have a place to sleep comfortably overnight is very important when they take on a long haul.

Pay Per Hour

Often, truck drivers will negotiate their salaries around a rate that is based on mileage and not on hours. For an experienced independent truck driver, the rate per mile could be as high as 60 cents a mile. This means for an experienced independent truck driver traveling an average of 70 miles an hour on the interstate can make an average of 42 dollars an hour. If the haul, or trip, equals out to 800 miles then the driver will make $480. This of course does not include his or her rates for accommodations.

Experience and Reputation

The average truck driver salary is also based on experience and reputation. A reputable truck driver is often going to get paid a higher rate because he or she is in high demand. Until a driver builds a reputation as a professional and reliable truck driver they will have to be satisfied with a lower pay rate. Just like many other job professions out there, a truck driver salary will depend on a person’s ability to perform at or above the client’s expectations.

Truck Owner Operators

Ownership of a truck can also make a difference in the salary amount that a truck driver earns. Often, truck drivers will use a truck that belongs to a distribution company. This can reduce the amount of money that a driver earns as the company will often withhold a portion of what they are being paid by the client to cover the cost of the maintenance of the truck. As an independent owner, the driver can account for this difference by charging a little more and therefore keep the cost of truck maintenance from interfering with his overall profit.

Many drivers enter into the profession of being a truck driver after seeing commercials on televisions promising salaries as high as $100,000 a year. It’s important to remember that this, although possible, is extremely rare. In addition to being rare, the time it will take to become a truck driver who earns a salary as high as this is longer than a few months or even a few years. It may take more than a decade before a driver sees a salary close to $60,000 a year. Most truck drivers will retire before they begin to earn $100,000. This is not to say that a truck driver salary isn’t good. On the contrary, it is a decent and honest living.

Distribution or Shipping Company Advantages

The best way to become a truck driver who earns a six figure income before hitting retirement age is to not only own his or her own truck, but to also own a distribution or shipping company. A truck driver who has developed a respected reputation has a good probability of owning a successful shipping company and therefore making a $100,000 a year or more. By becoming a business owner and therefore evolving from an independent contractor, a truck driver can increase his or her chances of making a substantial truck driver salary.

Working as truck driver can provide a salary that a person can rely on to make a living. How much they’ll earn depends on the abilities, reputation, and amount of experience that the driver gains. Most importantly, a truck driver salary is always negotiable.

Independent owner operators always face the same dilemma. Once the freight is delivered, they have to drive back with an empty truck. Even if you are only doing local deliveries you know what it feels like – an empty truck is like pouring money on the road and driving over it.

Wouldn’t it be better if you could find a way to pick up some quick local freight to cover the ride back. Even for long haul independent truckers, it can be worth it to find local freight wherever you are to help cut down on your costs. The question is how to find local truck driving jobs? There are two ways of doing it – the old-fashioned way and the new way.

The Old Fashioned Way

It used to be that you had to either have an in with a local company that would use you for pick up work or, you would read the ads posted at the truck stops or in the local trucking papers. A lot of the freight that was advertised was already gone by the time it even went to press. It got even riskier if you were looking for owner operator jobs because you really no way of knowing if you were going to get paid or if the check was going to be good until you had already put in the time and expense to deliver the load.

The old-fashioned way worked because it was all there was, but it also broke a lot of independent drivers before they could get started. This is one of the reasons shipping companies that used independent contractors began to get popular. These companies acted like brokers between loads and drivers and took care of all the payments – they also took a portion of the fee.

The New Way
The Internet and mobile technology have completely changed the way that truck drivers find local jobs. Now, you can sign onto sites called “truck load boards,” these are real time advertisements of loads that you can respond to. Sites like getloaded.com have worked hard to streamline the process and move it onto smart phones so you can even find your next load while on the road. Getloaded.com works like any other freelance job board site only they are offering owner operator jobs.

Companies or individuals who will be shipping register with the site and go through a verification process about payments and load types. Then, they can post any load to the board with a clear description of the lading and delivery. Owner operators then create their own accounts with a profile and can “bid” on the job. Once the job is won and delivered, payment is exchanged between the two and both the company and the driver can post reviews of each other. The more good reviews you get the more and better loads you will win.

How to do it Right
One of the problems with taking on owner operator jobs even off the truck load boards is that you don’t get that kind of face-to-face experience with a client where you can get a feel for whether or not they are reliable. Your best way to start using a board is to go small and make sure that the client is well rated and has a good credit score. You don’t want to take on too much and spread yourself too thin and wind up having to absorb the cost for the delivery because of a no pay.

Local Trucking Driving Jobs Are Not Just For Freight Forwarders

Not just tractor trailers either …

Trucking job boards don’t just list large freight loads. They also list chauffeur jobs, flatbed trucking and delivery driver jobs so being an owner operator is not always a requirement. There are companies that post jobs looking for drivers as well. The thing is, don’t limit your opportunities by only looking for one type of posting.

While you may be an owner operator, you could pick up other work driving someone else’s truck on a short term basis. While you are building your reputation on a service it is best to take what you know you will do well first. In the beginning, smaller is better until you establish a reputation and get a feel for how the site works.

Planning Ahead
A good approach to getting involved with the truck job boards is not to. What? Don’t immediately log in and start taking jobs, get a free level account and spend some time exploring the site. Make sure you read the forums and the FAQs and educate yourself on how things work. Then, when you think you are ready – don’t do anything again. Pick out a few jobs that interest you, don’t take them on but go through your day and imagine what would have to do to get it done well. This will start to show you which jobs are realistic and which are not. Once you have an idea about all of this, go ahead and start taking jobs.

The company delivers virtually all types of cargo across the 48 contiguous states. In addition, the company also moves freight to China, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, meaning it has a huge impact in the global economy. Schneider’s orange trailers are very recognizable in the US, by all people inside and outside the trucking industry.

The company offers truck driving courses in schools located all over the US. The company says that this is a strategy to produce home-grown and skilled truck drivers that adhere to the company’s standard in service, quality, and safety.

The education and training students get from the school also comes with a lot of incentives not found in other driving schools:

* Graduates of Schneider Trucking School get from one to three weeks of training before they hit the road. They get paid during this training and then move on to mileage payment as soon as they perform on-the-road assignments.

* Those who transfer from other driving schools can recover tuition reimbursements up to $3,500 after completing one month of service. Those eligible for reimbursement must have paid their own tuition at their old school.

Those who successfully graduate from a Schneider Trucking School can find a position in the company. They can take pride in being part of Schneider Trucking, now a ‘grand old man’ in American trucking history in its close to 75 years of business.

* Office careers — the company also offers positions in the office work necessary for supporting and administering its trucking fleet

* Maintenance career — as a trucking company, Schneider needs a lot of mechanics, electricians, and engineers for the maintenance of its vast equipment

CDL Practice Test – Starting Point For Future Professional Truck Drivers

Driving trucks and buses in a professional capacity may seem like the easiest thing to do, but nothing can be farther from the truth. Commercial driving is a tightly regulated profession. Therefore it is a must for every prospective driver to take a CDL practice test in order to increase one’s chances of passing the actual exam. Of course, only with a CDL can new truck drivers legally drive commercial motor vehicles.

Who needs a CDL practice test?

Anyone who wants to get a commercial driving license needs to pass a written and practical test given by the State or approved testing center. Start with a practice test if you are planning to drive the following:

* any truck (gross weight rating of 26,000 lb or more) used for commercial purposes
* any vehicle that transports hazardous materials that require warning placards under government regulations
* any vehicle that will carry 16 passengers or more

Some states may further require a CDL in order to legally operate buses, limousines, or vans for hire that carries 8-15 passengers (New Jersey); and school buses (New York).

If you already have a CDL, additional testing is required to get endorsements for driving these:

* double or triple trailers
* trucks equipped with air brakes
* trucks that transport hazardous materials
* hauling tankers for liquids or gases
* combination vehicles
* tow trucks

Driving schools also benefit from giving their students a CDL practice test. This will improve the school’s passing rate, which will be good for accreditation purposes.

Requirements in getting a CDL</4>

CDL Practice Test Info

It is not mandatory to undergo formal training (i.e. from driving schools) to get a CDL. But all new truckers must pass a WRITTEN TEST on HIGHWAY SAFETY and an exam ABOUT DIFFERENT PARTS OF A TRUCK. These knowledge tests have at least 30 questions, and student drivers must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions to pass the exam.

Student drivers also need to pass a DRIVING SKILL TEST that must be taken in the vehicle that they are planning to operate. Specific endorsements (such as for air brakes) require that the driving skill test be conducted in a vehicle with such an equipment.

Coverage of CDL practice test

The practice test, like the actual test, aims to teach potential drivers all the required skills and knowledge needed to properly and safely operate a truck. It includes map reading, route planning, and knowledge on existing Department of Transportation laws.

The skill test evaluates backing, turning, hooking a trailer, and road driving. Training schools also help would-be drivers with advanced techniques such as skid avoidance, recovery, safely transporting liquids and gases (its weight can constantly shift en route, affecting the balance of the vehicle), and how to cope with situations such as hydroplaning and a breakaway trailer.

Where to get a CDL practice test

Examinees can get a variety of free tests online, which simulate the coverage of the actual exam. These tests can all be about general driving knowledge, or it can be a specialized test that covers the questionnaire for a CDL endorsement such as those for air brakes, hazardous materials, etc.

Of course, the best practice tests are those operated by accredited driving schools, which closely approximates the State exams and are regularly updated to reflect any changes in state laws, driving knowledge, and navigation technology.

Practice makes perfect

Increasing one’s chances of successfully obtaining a CDL is the main objective of practice tests. It prepares the student for the actual questions. Those who take a practice test will also be more emotionally prepared for the actual exam, as compared to those who never took a CDL practice test at all.

Managing Your Supply Chain With Freight Forwarding

If you bought something, a truck brought it – such is the significance of freight forwarding not just to movement of consumer goods, but to the whole economic system in general. Freight forwarding is the circulatory system of the economy, the tie that binds and connects disparate points of manufacture, storage, distribution, and consumption.

Freight forwarding companies are agents that hold out services so that its clients (shipper or consignee) can easily plan and execute the transport of goods across states or across international borders. This allows the shipper to save time and effort and concentrate on its core business, versus the amount of logistics which would be needed if it were to ship the goods by its own means.

Modes of transport

Forwarding freight very often covers vast distances, bringing goods from afar to a local supply chain. Freight forwarding sometimes involves crossing international borders, requiring freight to be moved via different modes of transportation – by airplanes, ships, trucks, and trains.

The dynamics of freight forwarding involve the transportation of goods from the manufacturer or producer (the shipper) to the final point of distribution (to a consignee) through a carrier. The freight forwarder may not necessarily be a carrier – the forwarding agent is an expert in supply chain management, while the carrier is a transportation company licensed to move such goods.

Freight or cargo can be shipped over a single mode of transportation or in a combination of different modes (often called intermodal transport). For example, freight forwarding between two points in continental US may be over the road by a trucking service or by cargo trains, while shipping from the US to a point in Asia may need goods to be carried over the road, rail, air, or ocean lanes.

Domestic and international freight forwarding

Domestic freight forwarders in the US are required to register with the Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Carriers need to comply with DOT rules regarding the handling and transportation of goods within US jurisdictions. Among other requirements, forwarders may need to get special licenses, business certifications, and various other compliance requirements of the government.

International freight forwarding to or from the US via ocean transport need licensing from the Federal Maritime Commission. Such forwarders must be licensed by the agency as Ocean Transportation Intermediary. On the other hand, freight forwarders that handle international air freight are regulated by the International Air Transport Association, and must obtain an Indirect Air Carrier certification from the US Department of Homeland Security.

Responsibilities of freight forwarding companies

In exchange for shipping fees, freight forwarding services transports products to its destination point at a predetermined time, in a safe and secure condition. These companies are typically third-party providers, bridging the supplier and consumer. They either operate their own carrier fleet, or contract transportation to a duly-licensed cargo forwarding company. Freight forwarders may also operate an extensive network of warehouses and stations for its services.

The forwarder is responsible for all logistical requirements involved in the transfer from shipper to consignee. The forwarding company takes care of the paperwork, bills of lading, customs paperwork for international shipments, export declarations, security certifications, and other documentation required by government authorities.

International shipping can prove to be a logistical nightmare to a small company, so it may be a cost-effective solution to contract a forwarding company knowledgeable in this process.

Your company needs freight forwarding services when…

•	The logistics involved in moving goods by your own means (e.g. company vehicles) disrupts your core business
•	Moving products results in too much paperwork and micromanagement by your company
•	You have no specialized equipment to transport your own freight
•	You are not familiar with government regulations and international treaties on freight forwarding
